Anne Smith began her association with the University of British Columbia as a student, graduating with a B.A. in 1921. She later received a B.L.S. from the University of Washington and an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Michigan. Smith joined the UBC Library as a reference librarian in 1930. Malcolm Lowry was born in 1909 in Birkenhead, England. By the age of 30, when he had arrived in British Columbia, he had received a B.A. in English from Cambridge University, published a novel and travelled to the United States and Mexico.
